- Raymond Horan December 30, 1996 Raymond J. Horan, 99, of East Northampton Street, Wilkes-Barre Township, died Monday at his home Born March 31, 1897 in Wilkes-Barre Township, he was the son of the late Michael T. and Mary Rooney Horan. He graduated from Mansfield State Teachers College and St. Thomas College (now the University of Scranton). He served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War I. For 42 years, he taught in the Wilkes-Barre Township schools and was vice principal of the high school, before retiring. Following retirement, he served as zoning officer for Wilkes-Barre Township. He taught violin for many years, and played with the Scranton Philharmonic Orchestra and others orchestras. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Gorham Horan, on July 1, 1994; brothers, Michael, Thomas, Maurice and Quentin; sisters, Margaret McGinley and Kathryn Swan. Surviving are children, Raymond, Middlesex, N.J.; Mary Claire Smith, Port Republic, Md.; Robert, Clarks Green; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary McGoff, St. Petersburg, Fla.; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday from the McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the Chapel at St. Joseph's Friary, Wilkes-Barre Township. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
