- William Russell Roe, Sr. of Sullivan, MO passed away at 9:55 a.m. Monday, October 3, 2011 at the age of 82 years.
William entered this life on November 2, 1928 in Pleasant Hope, MO and was the oldest of 8 children born to James Russell and Anna Marie (Murdock) Roe. He was raised in and around Springfield, MO where he graduated from Central High School in 1948, and on July 6, 1949, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served for four years. All of his life he enjoyed flying and aircraft. Bill was a long-time employee of MacDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis and retired from there on December 24, 1988.
Bill and Virginia were united in marriage on May 23, 1952 and were blessed with two sons, William Russell, Jr. and Robert David. Bill was saved as a young man and he and Virginia were members of the First Church of the Nazarene of Wellston, MO. After moving to Sullivan, they regularly attended First Baptist Church of Sullivan until health issues prevented them from doing so. He was a member and sang for the Franklin County Gospel Jubilees for many years and volunteered at Missouri Baptist Hospital as a member of the auxiliary.
William is survived by his wife Virginia of the family home, one son, William Russell Roe, Jr, and wife Kathy of Fayetteville, NC; five grandchildren, Brandy, William III, Andrew, Holly, and Cheri; one great-granddaughter, Celeste; one brother, David Roe and wife Johnola of Rocky Mount, VA; four sisters, Shirley Insell of New Port Richie, FL, Sharon Smith of Hardenville, MO, Eunice Bryan and husband Jim of Billings, MO, and Christine Tooley and husband Bill of Bolivar, MO; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Along with his parents, William was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Roe; one brother, John Paul Roe and a sister, Ruth Lockmiller.
Funeral services for William Roe, Sr. were conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Southside Chapel of the Eaton Funeral Home, with visitation Pastor Ted Hurley officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery at Fair Grove, MO on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.
Arrangements were under the care of the Eaton Funeral Home, Sullivan, MO.
