Mrs. Emma W. Lucas
Mrs. Emma W. Lucas, widow of Oliver J. Lucas, died at her home, this city, on Friday of last week, January 31, three days after the anniversary of her birth. Her death occurred after an illness extending over about ten months.
Mrs. Lucas was the daughter of the late William H. and Margarette Ewell Matthews, and was born in Davenport, Iowa, January 28, 1855. Very early in life, the family came to Eastern Virginia, and subsequently Mr. and Mrs. Lucas came to Pocomoke City, taking up their residence here in 1893.
The deceased is survived by three daughters: Mrs. William Wigton of Yeadon, Pa; and Mrs. Willaim S. Bowen and Mrs. Samuel Crockett, of Pocomoke City. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, conducted by Rev. Mr. Leister, of Bethany Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. E. L. Bunce, former pastor of the same church. Interment in the cemetery of Bethany. The pallbearers were: Messrs. Paul Ewell, Frank Hudson, George Smullin, T. Pratt McAllen, William E. Bounds and Dr. R. L. Hall.
Mrs. Lucas was well known and highly esteemed in this community. She belonged of course, to a past generation and has seen many changes both local and elsewhere. Her people belonged to an age when the modern methods of transportation would have been pronounced miracles, had they been mentioned. She could recall when her father and his brother drove from the Midwest to their Eastern home in the traditional horse and buggy, and, of course, deemed it at that time no hardship. People with such background are, indeed, a loss when death removes them from this mechanical age. Much of the romance of living is removed and people lapse into a routine which does not compare, in the minds of many, with the ease and freedom of former years.
