    Memo:
    Colonel Charles Scarburgh was also the proprietor of much land, owning three thousand and fifty acres on Pnngoteague Creek alone, in 1652. He was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1688 and also in other years; and of the Council from 1691 until his death. In 1692, he was Councillor, Collector of the Eastern. Shore, Naval Officer of the same, and Commander-in-Chief of Accomac, and presiding Justice of that County.

    Buried:
    Scarburgh Graves are near Evans Wharf. Two large imported flat slabs lay side by side about three-quarters way across a large field. Whitelaw (page 808) indicates this as the possible burial site of Charles and Elizabeth Scarburgh. There are no inscriptions on the stones.

    Charles married Elizabeth Bennett about 1670. Elizabeth (daughter of Gov. Richard Bennett and Ann) was born about 1642; died in Jul 1719; was buried in Scarburgh Graves, Accomack County, VA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    In the Assembly of 1629, "For the Easterne Shoare noe burgesses did appear," but in the Assembly of 1629-30, Accomac was represented by Captain Thomas Graves, Captain Edmund Scarburgh, Obedience Robins and Henry Babgwell. The Assembly of 1631-2 (in which Accomac was represented by Captain Scarburgh and John Howe) enacted a law, restricting intercourse between the people and the Indians.

    Memo:
    Captain Edmund Scarburgh, the immigrant from Norfolk, and the father of the famous Colonel Edmund Scarburgh, was one of the Justices of the first Accomac Court in 1631-2.
