Thomas, afterwards Ensign Thomas Savage, came to Virginia with the first settlers when but thirteen years old, and in 1608 was given to Powhatan by Captain Newport in exchange for Namotacke, an Indian. He remained for some years with the Powhatlans and learned their language, so that he was able to render the Colony much service as an interpreter.
